Shop Local: Our First Out-and-About in Oakham

One of our challenges for 2020 is to shop as locally as possible… today we took ourselves out-and-about in Oakham to find out what our local retailers offer.

Many of the independent shops were closed for a well-earned Christmas break, so we didn’t get the opportunity to explore everything. Here are some of the stores we did explore 🙂

Hygge, Mill Street

Hygge is a gorgeous little Aladdin’s cave of goodies, from homeware to jewellery and accessories – it was by far our favourite shop of the day and where we spent most of our money!

(Much was spent on gifts, so we cannot share all our purchases today!)

Cavells, Mill Street

Cavells offers high-end designer clothing for men and women, together with homewares and an in-store beauty salon, Pure Beauty. You can also pop through to Fika for delicious Scandi-inspired food and drink.

It was good to see the vintage influence on many current designers and ranges, and Lisa was so close to temptation in the homewares section, where The Stamford Notebook Company’s gorgeous journals and travel sets were available.

Cavells have up to 50% off a lot of their stock, with the exception of new arrivals.

Elizabeth Stanhope, Mill Street

Another Aladdin’s cave, this time for interiors – some gorgeous chairs, chandeliers, mirrors and more…

They have 40% off their Christmas range and, for reasons unknown, Lisa chose some llama decorations to take home!

Partners, Mill Street

Partners is a stalwart of Mill Street, and offers a good range of smart-casual ladieswear and accessories, including some lovely knitwear and costume jewellery.

A lovely surprise was a range of cards and little gifts, quite different to other shops in town.

Partners have 30% off for their sale items.

Cowgirl in Couture, Mill Street

Cowgirl in CoutureWe had our noses pressed to the window here – there’s a gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choos on display, with some lovely vintage-style necklaces, too.

Temptation may have gotten the better of us had the shop been open!!

Stray’s Coffee Shop, High Street

Full of customers as we walked by (and because we love Kavanagh’s teas a bit too much), we didn’t stop here. Definitely one for another day though, as the decor and word-of-mouth reviews do tempt us!

Pearce’s Jewellers, High Street

While we didn’t call in today, we’ve both shopped here on many occasions – they have some gorgeous jewellery and watches, including a huge range of Pandora charms, plus some beautiful Clogau pieces – we spied a beautiful snowflake pendant on sale in the window!

Kavanagh’s Tea Room, Church Passage

Into Kavanagh’s for a lovely cup of tea… we chose a cream tea as a treat! Lisa’s favourite tea here is the Rose Congue, and Siobhan chose Peppermint.

The tea room is relaxed and friendly – you will always be welcomed with a smile and the cosy little rooms could easily see us chatter away for hours!

Fabulous breakfasts, including Eggs Benedict and salmon with scrambled eggs, are served from 9am – 12noon, followed by some delicious lunches and wonderful cakes and afternoon tea options.

Quality Discounts (QD), Church Street

QD may be a chain, but a number of local people are employed here after the store took over the Fords of Oakham department store building a couple of months ago.

Similar to Wilko, QD offers lots of discount food, homewares, outdoor clothing, kids’ clothing and toys, petcare items and general sundries – a welcome addition to the town for many people.

Walkers of Oakham, High Street

Another old favourite – as book-lovers it’s often a shop we call into. In addition there’s beautiful stationery, newspapers and magazines, Yankee Candles and Thorntons chocolates.

Until next time…

If you’re a Rutland shop or business please follow us on Facebook and Instagram – we’re planning regular shopping trips in Oakham and Uppingham, and we’d love to learn more about what you do 🙂

We have not been paid or gifted any items by the businesses featured here – we’re just regular shoppers 🙂
